Carbon copy forms—also known as NCR (No Carbon Required) forms—are still widely used across industries for invoices, delivery receipts, purchase orders, and service tickets. While they provide a reliable way to duplicate handwritten data across multiple layers, scanning them can be tricky. If not handled properly, important details—especially from lower sheets—can be lost in the digitization process.

Understanding Carbon Copy Forms
These forms typically consist of 2 to 4 thin, coated sheets stacked together. The top page is often crisp and legible, but subsequent copies become lighter and less defined, especially if the pressure applied when writing was weak. These lower sheets may contain:

We fine-tune scanner settings to enhance faded writing without overexposing the background, ensuring the text stands out without distortion.
3. Flatbed or Manual Feed Scanning
Delicate NCR forms can jam or misfeed in high-speed scanners. We often use flatbed scanning for better control and to prevent damage.
4. Multiple Page Verification
We compare all copies (top to bottom) to ensure no data is missing from lower layers. If needed, we digitally enhance or manually adjust for readability.
5. Post-Scan Image Cleanup & OCR
For searchable archives, we apply OCR after enhancing the image to increase text recognition accuracy—even for light or slanted handwriting.
When Scanning Isn’t Enough
In some cases, especially with extremely faint carbon impressions, we recommend photographing the page under special lighting or scanning at higher DPI (600 or above) to capture every possible detail.
